Introduction

The Idea of the Holy Catholic Church:
“You cannot have God for your Father if you have not the Church for your mother” (Cyprian, The Unity of the Catholic Church)
Now what this at first seems to say is a scary thought but the reality of it is true, for the church as the body of Christ in whom we all are being built on is foundational to the christian life.
-From the Garden the Lord has been creating a peoplr
-In Abraham he gave them a future
In Jacob he gave them a name
In David he gave them a promise
In Christ He Fulfilled them all and open the way
Through the Apostles teachings we see the work of Christ uniting us together
(overview: Peter AT Pentecost 3000 added, The Book of Acts, Each Epistle the local churches are instructed, Revelation the whole of Christ kingdom is seen in worship around the throne)
The Conference we gather at today ( 5 Local Congregations are represented by pastoral staff members who are preaching the word, another several are represented in the men who spoke on our panels)
So When I wish to speak of the Holy catholic church I speak of the communion of saints past present and future. And in the creed we see the characteristics that make up it up:
It is Holy for it has been purchased by Christ
It is Catholic in that it is universal in its nature
It the Church for it has been called out to be together
So To unpack the reality of this truth Join me in the Book of 1 Peter ch 2 (1-10)
(Read the text)
So Why 1 Peter? (Joke about preaching it a year ago)
Actually the reason begin sin chapter 1
1 Peter 1:1–3 ESV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
On pack the churches of dispersion (once probably in Rome now in 5 locations still one church....?)
How are they seen as One through out the letter he speaks to them all as one. so as we journey in this text we see a letter directly written to many calling them to oneness......for their nature defines who they are not their locations. Their savior denotes their identity not the group they gather with.

The Holy & catholic nature of the Church is Found in their Desire for Christ (1-3)

1 Peter 2:1–3 ESV
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
The Church is Made up of those who by God’s grace have put away the Old way
It is no longer who we are it is simply who we were
Ephesians 2:1–5a ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
English Standard Version Chapter 22 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses,
In it’s Holiness it Yearns for Christ (Not itself or it’s own indulgences)
-The Word Nourishes like milk
-The Word Grows us in maturity just as milk grows a child
-The word is Of great flavor we can’t help but yearn for it

The Holy & catholic nature of the Church is built in Christ and Lived together(4-5)

1 Peter 2:4–5 ESV
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1
English Standard Version Chapter 24 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
-Those whom he has called are temples of the living God
-Those whom he has called are a Holy Priesthood who intercede for others and offer worship
-Their lives are acts of Worship in every way.
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
English Standard Version Chapter 12I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Holy & catholic nature of the Church is separated from the World by Christ (6-8)

1 Peter 2:6–8 ESV
For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
English Standard Version Chapter 26 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
-Christ is the Foundation and cornerstone that the catholic church is based on (there is a local and universal nature to this)
-If you have believed in Him then you will not be put to shame
Isaiah 28:16 ESV
therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’
-original text dealt with the rejection of God in favor of their own desires, and that the God would lay out a Savior who would show the reality that God is not mocked, nor is he silent against those who would claim to worship him yet choose to pursue evil and injustice.
-Those who trust in the Lord will be honored in the time of Christ’s return (this is meant as an encouragement as they deal with injustice and struggle with seeing evil flourish while the just seem to be in pain)
-Those who Reject the Lord are seen by their continue desire to pursue their own desires (Christ requires love and obedience, while the world can not except such a God)
1 Corinthians 1:22–24 ESV
For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
)- 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

The Holy & catholic nature of the Church is Found in the Transformation of Christ (9-10)

1 Peter 2:9–10 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
1 Peter 2:1
The Names He connects here are found in the OT both in & but here they take on a new dimension as the people of God include all who call on the name of the Lord
-The Church is a new Race (God has made us New he called us out we are His, there should be no form of racism in the family of God for all who call on the name of the Lord regardless of the color of their skin or the place where they are born share one race and that is God’s)
-The Church has a new Job (We are a royal priesthood, or job exists as those who seek to reconcile the world to God through the proclamation of the Gospel and the preaching of the good news)
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
-Their Home is now distinct from the World and is defined by Holiness
-They are defines by their Father (We are now the Possession of God the father who lovingly brought us back to himself)
-They have Mercy that was not deserved. No longer alone in this world, but they belong to Christ and one another.
(
Hosea 2:23 ESV
and I will sow her for myself in the land. And I will have mercy on No Mercy, and I will say to Not My People, ‘You are my people’; and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’ ”
